Privacy notice
Synapse is run by Elva, who is the data controller for everything described here. This is the whole of what we hold, not a summary of it.
What we hold
- Your questions and the answers. Every question, what each model said, every objection they made to each other, and the final written answer.
- Your account. Email address, a scrypt hash of your password (never the password), when you signed up, your plan and how many questions you have used.
- If you sign in with Google or Apple. The email address and account id they give us. Nothing else, and we do not get access to anything else in your Google or Apple account.
- Your address, briefly. Questions asked without an account are counted against your IP address so the free trial cannot be taken twice. IPv6 addresses are cut to their network part.
- Cookies. One for your session, one for your language, one for your currency. No advertising cookies of ours. Whop's measurement script, described below, may set one of its own.
- What the voice was asked to remember. If you tell Synapse in a voice conversation to remember something about how you want to be helped, that sentence is stored against your account and sent with future voice sessions. Settings lists everything it holds and deletes any of it.
Who it is sent to
Your question is sent to the AI providers whose models are answering it. Today that is xAI, Anthropic and OpenAI, and the models in the room are listed on the front page. Each of them handles your question under their own terms as our processors. We do not send them your email address or anything else identifying you.
Card payments are handled by Whop, who act as merchant of record. Card details go to Whop, never to us, and we hold only your membership id and whether it is currently valid. Whop are a controller in their own right for the payment they take, under their own privacy policy. The site runs on Fly.io in Europe.
One page loads something of Whop's. The upgrade page draws its card form from js.whop.com, so that form, and any cookie it sets, comes from Whop rather than from us. It is the only third-party script anywhere on Synapse, it appears on that one page, and it is there because handing your card details straight to the people taking the payment is safer than passing them through us. Every other page loads nothing from anyone but us.
Nobody buys this data from us. We do not sell it, and there is no advertising on the service.
Training our own model
Elva is training its own model, DELA, on the arguments this council has already had. Questions and answers can be part of that training set, and answers you explicitly edit and save as preferred are the most valuable part of it.
If you would rather your questions were kept out of that, email us and we will exclude your account and remove what is already in there. We will not ask you why.
How long we keep it
- Questions and answers: until you delete them or delete your account.
- Account records: until you delete the account, then removed within 30 days.
- IP counters for the free trial: rolling, and never longer than 30 days.
- Payment records: kept as long as tax law requires, which is six years in the UK. The payment itself is held by Whop.
What you can do about it
From your account page you can export everything we hold on you as a file, and you can delete your account, which takes the history with it and cannot be undone. You also have the right to correct what we hold, to object to us using it, and to complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk if you think we have handled it badly. We would rather you told us first.
The legal bit about why we are allowed to
- Running the service and your account: because we have a contract with you.
- Counting the free trial and keeping the service from being abused: our legitimate interest in not being run up a bill by a script.
- Improving our own model: our legitimate interest, which you can object to at any time by emailing us.
- Payment and tax records: a legal obligation.
Children
Synapse is not for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly hold data about them. If you think we do, tell us and it will be removed.
